Have You Counted Your Blessings

Every day I count my blessings that God has given me.I have a loving wife who spends a lot of her time taking care of me now that I have health problems.
In the past 3 1/2 years my health has changed dramatically ,There are times when I get Gout which is very painful,I also have a neurological problem that causes severe headaches and numbness on my face.I suffer from high blood pressure that at times runs dangerously high even though I am on 3 meds for it.I have severe Asthma and a degenerative disk disease in my back with 2 bulging disks and arthritis in my back and knees. When my health which at times drives me nuttier than I am already,( like Friday when I was on my feet most of the day) and since then my back has been hurting. It hurt all weekend.Today I awoke and my finger tips are numb, bottom of both feet are numb and I have sharp pain in my lower back, now a few years ago this would had made me depressed but I realize that there are people who are suffering worse than I am.It is that numbness in my feet that drives me crazy. Then God reminds me that there are families who are separated from their loved ones due to illness and some who have lost loved ones.
I consider myself blessed with good health even with all my physical problems.I am surrounded by my family and have a God who understands my physical problems. He allows me to suffer so that I can witness to those who also are suffering. He allows me to learn and teach through my own experiences.
I count my blessings every day even during the hard times as well as the good times.

What My Church Denomination Has Taught Me

I am a member of the Wesleyan Denomination, for those who do not know it is a Christian denomination in the United States, Canada, South Africa, Namibia, Asia and Australia., who's religious beliefs are evangelical, holiness . The church is part of the holiness movement and has roots in the teachings of John Wesley. The church is Wesleyan and Arminian in doctrine.
In the past two years I have been taught that they expect the congregation to be a good steward of God's money and live on a budget while the Denomination Leaders,District leaders, and local church and leaders(not all leaders) do not.
I spent several years in business as a manager, owner of my own business and pastor of a small church and during this time I had to read a profit and loss statement and if it wasn't in the budget you didn't purchase it, or build it.
Some churches( not my current church) have done away with van ministry because it is not profitable,it costs money to run the van and the church says that those people do not help pay for the church and then they turn around and purchase or build a new church building even if they don't have a budget for it and expect the congregation to make up the differences with challenges to pay more than 10 % tithes or building pledges by saying God deserves better or people  with good income who never come to  know Christ because they never here a sermon about sin so they wont be offended and leave with their money.
Yesterday our Denomination's district voted to merge with another district in our denomination because by doing so it wold move them up a few spots in the statistical department in attendance, church income and total churches .They are two districts who are very weak and all they did were to combine two weak districts without solving the problem as to why they are weak. Yes we gained in numbers in attendance but that is not the solution. The solution is winning more to Christ, then teach them about tithing, and witnessing.
It seems the denomination has lost it's focus,it is seems to be concerned about attendance numbers, and income and are willing to over look being a steward of God's money in which the congregation has tithed to the local church ,and winning souls to Christ to filling a church up to pay for a building it can't afford than winning souls to Christ. This does not mean that we don't keep our present churches up or if we out grow them not to build, but it means that we are to be good stewards of all God gives us.
It seems to be a thing now to change the name of churches ,we drop the word church,or Wesleyan from them because we almost don't want anyone to know what we stand for.Instead of preaching about sin and the consequences of it, we teach and preach feel good sermons and  mention very little or any at all about sin so we won't offend anyone (you know those  worship attendance numbers that pay for a church you can't afford). This happens in other denominations also, not just ours.I am only talking about my denomination today.
It is not the name church or Wesleyan that needs to be dropped it is the legalistic and liberal preaching that needs to be dropped. Do we need an encouraging sermon?Yes, but not every Sunday, sometimes you need to here about sin and what happens if you do not come to know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and legalistic preaching will not win someone to Christ either,it is not a sin to listen to contemporary Christian music,or wear jeans to church or let the youth go bowling together or read from the NIV or NKJV or some other bible translation, this type of preaching is as dangerous as not preaching about sin.
The Bible tells us to be a good steward of what God gives us. Jesus went to the tax collectors and had dinner with them, drank from the well with a woman who was living in sin came upon the rich ruler or the thief on the cross. He could had just gave them a feel good sermon and used their money or friendship,or not told the thief the truth to support His ministry but he was obligated to tell them the truth .Some came to know him and others walked away.

Remembrance

On Sunday Sept.11th it will be 10 years since the tragic day of the nation coming under attack by terrorists. The first plane that hit the twin towers then another and then the Pentagon and then the plane that went down in a field after the passengers overtook the terrorists. As we remember those that died that day (2,975)let us remember also the 7,468 U.S. and coalition troops have lost their lives since that day.
Terrorist attacks and conflicts have trickle down effects ,wives and husbands become widowers, children grow up without both parents, military personnel become disabled physically and mentally.A lot have a hard time of adjusting to normal life when returning and some will be called names.
This is not the first time the U.S. has been attacked and innocent lives have been lost.Pearl Harbor(2,403)military and civilians died that day and approximately 1,282 were wounded. This drew the United States into WW II which the United States lost 416,800 military deaths 1,700 civilians.
The price of freedom always comes with a price.
The Korean War(53,686) and Vietnam conflict (58,209)WW I (116,708)
The 9/11 attack brought critique on our President , our  national security( because of rumors days ahead of an impending attack ).The 9/11 terrorist attack should not be forgotten. It should be remembered in the same breath as Pearl Harbor and other tragedies (Oklahoma City )..etc.
The United States the most diversified country in the world on race and religion needs to remember the freedom they have are because of those so willing to give even in the tragedies in other countries(some our enemies).Let us always take time to remember the lives that have been affected by tragedies through out history.

God has given me a talented family.

Let start off by saying that my family is very talented and  that talent is from God.My wife down to my youngest has a talent.
Let start with my wife Fay.She is a  published writer ,having been published in Ideals magazine, she  has written other things such as a children's story for Christmas and poems. She also a talented seamstress and crochets scarfs that she sells ,she refinishes furniture, and is a great cook(limited only by her picky eating husband)  and is a very talented photographer with a great eye for detail. It is her photography that I just can't get enough of seeing.(except her home made fudge) Such a great eye for detail and subject.Just love her images.
Then there is my son Robert,he can do just about anything ,work on cars new or old, drywall, electrical work but he excels at horse training and being a dad.He is fantastic at training horses and riding horses and he got this talent from God because he has not had a single lesson on riding or training horses. It's the dad part I want to talk about. He will be getting married in the coming months and will be adopting her children who absolutely love him. This something that I think he learned from his dad but more important, it is a talent God has given him as he has always been good with children.
Wow, then there is Rachel, she is also very talented.Animals just love her,she knows a lot about how to care for them, she would make a great Veterinarian Assistant if given the chance, she is pretty good at taking care of swimming pools .Our house came with one and we knew nothing about taking care of a pool but she is top notch at taking care of pools now,she can tell you what you need to do to it.She is also like her brother and is fantastic with children. She has been taking care of Ian since he was just a few months old.She is so good she is in demand from other people to watch their children. She is so dedicated at what she does,no matter if  it is caring for animals, swimming pools or children she can do it and this is all from God
Then there is Natalie ,she is very talented .Natalie's full time job is difficult and demanding as she works with physically and mentally challenged clients, she is very good at her job and it's rewards for doing her job are not always shown. She enjoys singing and  has been singing since she was at a young age.She loves to sing in church and Natalie and Michael (her husband) also sing together in church. She has not had one voice lesson in her life but she get's her singing talent from her mother's side of the family. It is her photography that I love, like her mother she is very good at details and subject matter. She just recently has started her own photography business,Natalie Bristow Photography.

God has been good to me.He gave me a family that are unique in their own way and each have talents that they excel in.I am truly blessed by God .

A Man Named Bobby

When I was a teenager at the age of 14 I met Bobby,  he was if (I am not mistaken of his rank) Chief Petty Officer Johnson.
I met Chief Petty Officer Johnson when they started Navy Sea Cadets at the old Navy Reserve Center in Owensboro,Ky.The Sea Cadets was like ROTC, but was on our own time and we learned things like what they taught in the Navy.
Chief Petty Officer Johnson was very likeable by everyone in the Navy Sea Cadets. He was more than a leader he was our friend. When those in the unit needed discipline (which was limited)  he disciplined us,when we were needing encouragement he gave us encouragement.
When I was 16,several from our unit went to Orlando,Florida for mini boot camp for two weeks ,because of the leadership from Lt.Comdr. Stewart and Chief Petty Officer Johnson we excelled and our unit  graduated with top honors.Chief Petty Officer Johnson made the trip down to see us graduate from boot camp.He was as proud of us as if he was the Lt.Cmdr. himself.
I used what I had learned from my three years in the Navy Sea Cadets and applied it in life.
It was 24 years later when I met Chief Petty Officer Johnson again ,only now he was Mr.Johnson(not for long). He was still the same, friendly, always encouraging person, but he made one thing clear. He said he was not Mr.Johnson he was Bobby.
Bobby and I ran across each other from time to time through church functions when the churches we attended held joint services and special singing's or revivals.A year ago I moved my membership from the other
Wesleyan Church in town. The first person who not only welcomed me but became one of my best friends in the church was Bobby. We shared funny stories from my teenage years,to praying for each others physical needs.
Just a few weeks later Bobby had a major physical problem come upon him that no one knew what caused it.While even when feeling down,Bobby continued to give encouragement to those around him. This past Sunday, Bobby went to be with the Lord.Whatever physical problems he had ,are no longer and I can still hear his wisdom.
He left behind a loving wife ,who like Bobby would tell you it is not Mrs.Johnson it's Deanie or Aunt Deanie, a daughter Debbie and a son Mark and several grandchildren.I tell you this because he is so proud that his family serve the Lord  today, just as he did all of those years.
I will miss Bobby, but one thing I know, he would not want to trade his place in Heaven for Earth.

The State of Professional Photography Today

I agree 100 % on helping newbies in the field of photography after all I had a mentor. In fact if you are a member of Professional Photographers Association part of the creed is to inspire or encourage others starting in the field.
The most noticeable thing I see about new photographers today is disrespect to the professional industry on pricing and printing. When doing family and friends I understand discount pricing but to go an under price because you have a full time job and you are doing this as a hobby or you use Walmart instead of a professional lab is really not taking the profession seriously. At the same time I also do not agree with the industry pricing standard if we used that standard then we would need to charge $75.00 for an 8 x 10 and in this area there are not a lot of customers who could or will pay that,or $8000.00 dollars for a wedding. I am saying pricing also depends on your goal of how much you think you should charge your customer.Just remember if you are serious about this as a profession you will buy Professional or Semi-professional camera equipment and good lenses and use a professional website and lab. Some professional labs that are excellent are Black River Imaging ,White House Color Lab,Millers,CPQ just to name a few, there are several other excellent professional labs you can use.
Dress  professionally ,I can not believe what some photographers wear to a wedding or on location shoot.I know that suit and tie or even tuxedos are not the standards anymore but look like a professional when your doing your job.

The industry is changing on style, technique and marketing but that is no reason to short change the industry standards of being a professional photographer.
My advice is if you want to be a Professional Photographer and learn how to shoot weddings have a mentor or become a second shooter for someone to gain experience.Subscribe to Photovision Video,Rangefinder Magazine or Professional Photographer Magazine.

Royal Wedding

Today people are getting up before the crack of dawn, some are turning on their televisions others are booting up their computers to watch as some say the Wedding of the Decade.
Before I go any further I want to state that I am not making fun or criticizing anyone for doing this after all my wife is watching the wedding. Here in the United States we are recovering from horrible storms from past two weeks, just this week more than 200 people were killed in four states,Japan is still recovering from the tsunami so something like this helps us recover and gives us something else to talk about.
As I look at the coverage I see the streets are lined with people trying to get a glimpse of the royal couple or the celebrities that are attending.
The bible tells us also of a Royal Wedding.Christ(Bridegroom)will return for the church(Bride)if this was Christ returning would we be lining the streets or turning on our television coverage of the sky fixating on His return, how many celebrities would attend His return and would we had gotten  up at 4:00 A.M. and tuned in to watch the real Royal Wedding?

Eating Out

Last night my wife took me out to eat for my birthday.I turned 53, but that is not what I am going to blog about today.
My wife hates to go out to eat with me,not that she doesn't enjoy eating out it is the fact that during my 53 years of life I have managed fast food as well as full service restaurants and it is impossible for me not to speak up when I see things that are bad .
The first place(I won't mention their name) we went to was basically the only place with an all you can eat buffet bar with steak. We went paid for the meal and looked over the bar,we were amazed of the food on the bar ,wait let me change that to lack of food on the bar.If that wasn't bad enough the food that they did have did not look good at all.The steak did not look good, the fried pork chops were over cooked as was the fried chicken. That was the good stuff about the bar.I then proceeded to ask for my money back in which I received no apology about the food only that I could get a steak cooked the way I like it for future reference. What about the rest of the food?Excuse me,the last thing you want is a customer to leave with a bad experience.During my years of management I tried to never let one leave upset.I always apologized for the situation.
We then left and went to Henderson,Ky. some 25 miles away to eat at Golden Corral. This was not our first time eating at a Golden Corral but our first for the Henderson,Ky. location.(Wish they had one in Owensboro,Ky.)The food was fantastic, the steak was fantastic, the rolls just melted in my mouth the steak fries were hot and fresh off the bar each time. The cook made my steak just the way I loved it each time.Well done and it was tender to the taste.
The two most important things in the full service food business is service and food quality.A person will over look poor service if the food is excellent,a person might even over look poor food quality(most won't) if the service is great but someone will not over look both.
Fast food is just as bad,I won't even blog on that today.I will leave that to a later experience in A Day In Life Today.

Day 1

This is the first day of my blog and this blog represents A Day In Life Today, we will cover certain things in life.
I would like to share part of a devotional that I read recently. The key to successful living is to deny ourselves in order that God may fill us to overflowing with God's presence and power.Paul said in Galatians 2:20 "and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me.And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son Of God who loved me and gave himself for me." There is the path to real success. If we who are followers of Jesus would learn that one simple truth,we could turn this world upside down.
So there you have it,my first blog. This will not be an everyday blog.
